  1. Hi Hunter,
I have some interesting mice breeding info. I learned from a friend who breeds mice for her research (for cancer treatments in children with brain injuries). So I am not the expert, just interested in learning a bit about mice. Here are some tips she has learned from her research:

Pups can breed as young as 45 days.
Gestation period (the length of time of pregnancy) is 21 days
You know they are pregnant because the female has a “breeding Plug”
For best breeding, us a light timed for 10 hours of dark and 14 hours of light. They breed 4-6 hours into the dark period.
The breeding plug can first be seen 8-30 hours after breeding.
The estrus cycle is 4 days long, they ovulate on 3rd day.
Once pregnant, they look “fat” in 2 weeks.
Don’t touch the mothers once pregnant or touch the new pups for 3 days.
Diet- 11% fat pellets for moms, give glucose syrup to babies that don’t nurse.
    They nurse for 21-29 days.
Separate them at 21 days so no risk of moms breeding with one of the babies.
Put no more than 3 females with 1 male in a cage.
Don’t put 2 males together after they breed
Males can breed at 2-8 months old
Keep all the pups together but keep male pups in one cage and female pups in another.
Foster mothers- if a mom will not nurse her pups, you can put them on another mom 2 days after her own were born. Put perfume on the nose of the potential foster mom, never put more than 3 foster pups with a new mom. The mom may have 6 of her own and 3 fosters.

OK…. that’s all I know. I’d be interested to hear if you know all that from the mice breeding you have done so far. It’s very different to know these tips on paper and to actually witness them as I’m sure you have.

Keep up the good work. If you ever want to meet my friend who breeds research mice, I can ask her. She works in Baltimore though, but lives near Ridgely.
